Lotta's Fountain →
I stood at the corner of Kearny and Market, in the very innermost heart of San Francisco. Kearny Street was deserted. Half a dozen blocks away it was burning on both sides. The street was a wall of flame.
Why it's here: Jack London walked into the burning city in the first days of the 1906 fire and wrote this for Collier's. Lotta's Fountain, at Kearny and Market, became a meeting point for survivors; it still stands, and survivors gathered at it every anniversary at 5:12 a.m.
