Mission San Gabriel Arcángel →
Pretty Pomona gave me pleasant lodgings that night, and next day, February 1, 1885, a thirty-mile walk through beautiful towns, past the picturesque old Mission of San Gabriel, and down a matchless valley, brought me at midnight to my unknown home in the City of the Angels.
Why it's here: Lummis walked 3,507 miles from Cincinnati to Los Angeles, sending weekly dispatches to the Los Angeles Times, which made him its first city editor on arrival. He later founded the Southwest Museum. Mission San Gabriel, founded on September 8, 1771, was the fourth of California’s 21 Spanish missions.
