Where Los Angeles began
A self-guided walking tour by Here Before Us
In 1781, 44 settlers, at least ten of them Black, arrived from the Gulf of California to found a pueblo by the river, near the Tongva village of Yaanga. After a flood in 1815 it was rebuilt around this plaza, the heart of the town under Spain, Mexico and the United States. Walk the plaza church of 1822, the 1818 Ávila Adobe (the oldest house still standing in the city), Olvera Street and Pío Pico's hotel, and finish at Union Station, built in 1939 over the original Chinatown, which was demolished for it.
