Hitchcock's Vertigo
A self-guided driving tour by Here Before Us
Alfred Hitchcock shot Vertigo (1958) on location around San Francisco in late 1957. Every stop is a filming location from Wikipedia's list. (The bell tower scene was filmed at Mission San Juan Bautista, south of the Bay Area.)
Stops
Scottie's apartment, one block downhill from the "crookedest street in the world". The facade stayed mostly intact until 2012, when the owner walled in the entrance on the Lombard side.
Coit Tower appears in the background of many shots.
Gavin and Madeleine's apartment building at 1000 Mason Street still looks essentially the same. Across the street is the Fairmont Hotel, where Hitchcock usually stayed and where many of the cast and crew stayed during filming.
The flower shop Madeleine visits while Scottie follows her was at 224 Grant Avenue at the time of filming. It has since moved to 410 Harriet Street.
Judy lives at "the Empire Hotel", 940 Sutter Street. Her room was built on set, but the green neon "Hotel Empire" sign was based on the real hotel's sign.
Seen across the street from the "McKittrick Hotel" mansion in the film. The church was destroyed by fire in 1995.
The "McKittrick Hotel" was a privately owned 1880s Victorian mansion at Gough and Eddy Streets. It was torn down in 1959; the site is now an athletic practice field for Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory.
The Carlotta Valdes headstone made for the film was left here at Mission Dolores, and later removed because the mission considered it disrespectful to the dead.
The sanatorium where Scottie is treated. Built in 1928, the hospital closed in 1979 and was converted into condominiums.
The domed building Scottie and Judy walk past.
Madeleine jumps into the bay here, underneath the Golden Gate Bridge.
The gallery where Carlotta's portrait hangs. The portrait was lost, but many of the paintings around it in the film are still on view.
